¡Aprendamos las operaciones matemáticas básicas! Vamos a sumar, restar, multiplicar y dividir en español.
Hello ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to this very important lesson in which we are going to learn the four basic mathematical operations in Spanish: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Have you ever wondered how to do addition in Spanish, or how to say “division” in Spanish? Until today you’ll have those questions because we’ll learn all that and more!
The only thing I’m going to ask you is that you have already studied our lesson on “cardinal numbers in Spanish“, because, as it’s obvious, you’re going to need to know how to say the numbers.
So, let’s get started! Let’s explore each of these operations so you can become an expert in Spanish math. Let’s get to it!
Additions
To make an addition, we use in symbol “+” and it is read “más”. So, for example, if we want to add: “9 + 1” we say “nueve más uno” and it is written “9 + 1”. After the two numbers to be added, we place the symbol “=” and it is read “igual”. So the previous example would be “9 + 1 = 10” and we would say “nueve más uno igual diez” Let’s go with several examples of basic sums with integers in Spanish:
English | Spanish | 🎧 |
---|---|---|
10 + 10 = 20 | Diez más diez igual a veinte | |
100 + 100 = 200 | Cien más cien igual a doscientos | |
19 + 1 = 20 | Diecinueve más uno igual a veinte |
Subtractions
To do a subtraction, we will use the symbol “-“ and it is read “menos”. For example: “4 – 3” is read “cuatro menos tres”, then we add the symbol “=” and it is read “igual”. We write “4 – 3 = 1”. This would read “cuatro menos tres igual a uno”.
English | Spanish | 🎧 |
---|---|---|
5 – 3 = 2 | Cinco menos tres igual a dos | |
50 – 25 = 25 | Cincuenta menos veinticinco igual a veinticinco | |
100 – 3 = 97 | Cien menos tres igual a noventa y siete |
Multiplication
Multiplication is the basic operation we use to calculate the product of two or more numbers. To do a multiplication, we will use the symbol “x” and it is read “por”. For example: “4 x 4” is read “cuatro por cuatro”, then we add the symbol “=” is read “igual”. We write “4 x 4 = 16” this would read “cuatro por cuatro igual a dieciséis”.
English | Spanish | 🎧 |
---|---|---|
2 x 2= 4 | Dos por dos igual a cuatro | |
6 x 5 = 30 | Seis por cinco igual a treinta | |
9 x 9 = 81 | Nueve por nueve igual a ochenta y uno |
Division
Division is used to divide a number into equal parts. For example, if we have the number 10 and divide it into 2 equal parts, we will get 5. The division is indicated by the sign “÷” and is read as “dividido por”. For example, “10 ÷ 2” is read as “diez dividido por dos” and the result is 5.
English | Spanish | 🎧 |
---|---|---|
6 ÷ 2 = 3 | Seis dividido por dos igual a tres | |
10 ÷ 5 = 2 | Diez dividido por cinco igual a dos | |
81 ÷ 9 = 9 | Ochenta y uno dividido por nueve igual a nueve |
Final lesson recommendations
In conclusion, the mathematical operations learned in this lesson are a fundamental skill that we all need in everyday life, such as shopping and performing calculations. Learning and practicing these operations in Spanish will not only improve your math skills, but also your ability to communicate better in Spanish.
To practice the four operations in Spanish, we recommend that you start with basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division exercises. Look for online exercises, math workbooks and work with a study partner to review and practice together.
In addition, it is important that you pay attention to the key words used for each operation in Spanish, such as “más” for addition, “menos” for subtraction, “por” for multiplication and “dividido por” for division.
